Housing Equity

Housing Justice

Begins at Home

Advancing Fair Housing • Protecting Homebuyers • Building Generational Wealth

Housing Equity is a Minnesota nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding fair housing, protecting consumers, and helping underserved communities achieve safe and sustainable homeownership.

About Us

Housing Equity works to remove barriers to homeownership by providing education, advocacy, and consumer protection for underserved communities.
We primarily serve African immigrant communities—including Somalis, Oromos/Ethiopians, Eritreans, and other historically underserved populations—as well as Muslim families, first-time
homebuyers, refugees, and others facing housing discrimination or predatory lending. We believe every family deserves an honest, transparent, and equitable path to homeownership.

Our Mission

To advance fair housing, expand sustainable homeownership, and protect underserved communities through education, advocacy, and consumer protection.

Our Vision

A future where every family has equal access to safe, affordable, and sustainable housing.

What We Do

Fair Housing

Helping families understand and protect their housing rights.

Homeownership Education

Preparing first-time homebuyers through education and counseling.

Consumer Protection

Helping families recognize and avoid predatory lending, housing scams, and deceptive contracts.

Advocacy

Working with community partners and policymakers to expand housing opportunities and strengthen consumer protections.

Meet Our Founder

Housing Equity was founded by Farah Mohamed, a Principal Real Estate Broker, HUD Certified Housing Counselor, Certified Financial Coach, and homeownership educator with more than twenty years of experience.

After witnessing many immigrant and Muslim families being harmed by predatory housing practices—including Contract for Deed arrangements promoted as “interest-free” or & “Sharia-compliant” financing—Mr. Mohamed founded Housing Equity to ensure underserved communities have access to trusted education, fair housing advocacy, and ethical pathways to homeownership.

Homeownership should build generational wealth—not become a pathway to exploitation.
